Avondale Memorial Event
Sunday
September 6th, 2009
10:30 PM
Washburn Cemetary
1915 Washburn Street, Scranton, PA

There have been nearly 30,000 lives lost in mining accidents in
NEPA since records have been kept. This event is to commemorate
the 139th anniversary of the Avondale Mine Disaster which claimed
the lives of many local residents. Robert P. Wolensky who serves
as Professor of Sociology, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point an
author of several books about NEPA history will deliver the keynote
remarks at the Washburn Cemetery. The cemetery was the target
of vandals in recent months which prompted a fund raising project
lead by Linda Scott and assisted by the Lackawanna Historical
Society,

"Avondale was the most deadly of all anthracite disasters, with 110
men and boys lost, most of them of Welsh descent. The sorry
condition of the gravestones, and the need for a visible marker
facing Washburn Street, deserves our full attention. With continuing
community support, the 61 Welsh victims buried there will receive
their deserved respect." Prof. Bob Wolensky  ---2008 Event

"While this event highlights one disaster, we need to remember the
sacrifice of every anthracite worker lost. We need to understand
how these early Americans of diverse ethnic backgrounds created
the economic wealth and cultural richness that is the core of
America's exceptionalism."-Jerry Williams, President, Saint David's
Society of Lackawanna County----2008 Event

"One father, Mr. William P. Evans, was stretched out, with a son closely
clasped by each arm, while a third was lying between his legs with his head
resting on his father's breast. Another father, Mr. Hutton, lovingly embraced
a young son, and all appeared as if sweetly sleeping. "
